Northrop Grumman has delivered a miniaturized high-energy laser to the U.S. government.

The laser is ruggedized for field use and miniaturizing it allows for rapid placement in tactical situations.
The 10kW class high-energy laser, known as Phantom, is about 12 cubic feet (nearly the size of a mini fridge).
Weighing less than 200 pounds, it enables lift, carry and installation by as few as two personnel.
The Phantom customer will integrate it with other subsystems for testing and delivery to military customers.

...
1. DEW Programme Summary
1.1. The MOD Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) programme was initiated in 2019 to accelerate and exploit at pace DEW as an emerging technology with the potential to offer military advantage across the Land, Sea and Air domains. The programme seeks to deliver a range of benefits for the UK connected to DEW by leading and commissioning the required work to develop understanding, generate evidence and increase confidence in DEW as future capability choices addressing current and future threats. The programme has secured funding in financial years 24/25, 25/26 and 26/27 for a ‘Transition’ Phase of work that builds on the Concept Phase analysis and maturation activities conducted in financial years 21/22, 22/23 and 23/24. The areas of focus for the MOD DEW programme Transition phase are (hereafter referred to as ‘DEW Projects’):

1.1.1. Laser Directed Energy Weapon (LDEW) in a Maritime Air Defence application
1.1.2. LDEW in Ground Based Air Defence applications
1.1.3. RFDEW in Counter-Unmanned Air System (C-UAS) applications in the Land Domain

1.2. These initial three (3) DEW Projects are aimed at accelerating the maturation of DEW capability and build on the parallel DEW Capability Demonstrator Portfolio delivered by UK industry through Team Hersa, a joint DE&S and DSTL team. These DEW Capability Demonstrators will deliver DEW effectors integrated or installed onto military platforms for six (6) months of User Experimentation Phases beginning in 2024. They will provide relevant learning and hands-on experience for users which the Transition Phase DEW Projects will be able to exploit.

1.3. A Procurement Strategy for the DEW Transition phase is now in the early stages of development. To ensure the success of the DEW programme MOD is commencing early industry engagement to inform the strategy. MOD expects that industry will have key insights that will be considered as part of finalising the Procurement Strategy and before any formal procurement exercise begins. MOD is therefore seeking early views from industry via responses to the Request for Information (RFI) Questionnaire linked to this Opportunity Notice.
...
2.3. It is therefore currently anticipated that MOD would utilise a Restricted Procedure under the Defence and Security Contract Regulations (DSPCR) 2011 to procure a new multisupplier Framework split into capability Lots (see table 1 below), which will provide a flexible and agile route to market for DEW Transition Phase requirements. The multisupplier Framework would have a total value of approximately £150M over a three (3) year period with two (2) one year (1) extension options subject to additional funding approval. Potential Suppliers will be able to bid for one or more Lots based on their capability. It is intended that most work under the Framework will be allocated through the use of minicompetitions and subsequently delivered through call-off contracts subject to MOD’s Standardised Contracting 2 (SC2) template. Where appropriate MOD may choose to utilise other contracting mechanisms to deliver element of the DEW Transition phase, therefore participation in the Framework does not guarantee exclusivity.

From: Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and Ministry of Defence
Published 19 January 2024
...
DragonFire exploits UK technology to be able to deliver a high power laser over long ranges. The precision required is equivalent to hitting a £1 coin from a kilometre away.

Laser-directed energy weapons can engage targets at the speed of light, and use an intense beam of light to cut through the target, leading to structural failure or more impactful results if the warhead is targeted.

Firing it for 10 seconds is the cost equivalent of using a regular heater for just an hour. Therefore, it has the potential to be a long-term low-cost alternative to certain tasks missiles currently carry out. The cost of operating the laser is typically  less than £10 per shot.
...
The DragonFire weapon system is the result of a £100 million joint investment by the Ministry of Defence and industry. Together, the companies involved are supporting highly-skilled UK jobs in new cutting-edge technologies that are delivering a significant step-change in the UK’s capability in LDEW systems.

In 2017 the MOD’s Chief Scientific Advisor’s Research Programme awarded a £30 million contract to the DragonFire consortium to demonstrate the potential of LDEWs.

AC-130 Gunship’s Laser Weapon Cancelled, 105mm Howitzer May Be Removed

The AC-130J was set to get the first operational airborne laser weapon, but that plan is over as the gunship changes to ensure its relevance.

The U.S. Air Force has scrapped plans to flight test an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship armed with a laser directed energy weapon after years of delays. The Airborne High Energy Laser AHEL program for the AC-130J had for a time looked set to become the U.S. military's first operational aerial laser directed weapon. This all also comes amid a review of the AC-130J's current and future planned capabilities, which could see the gunships lose their 105mm howitzers, as part of a broader shift away from counter-insurgency operations to planning for a high-end fight.
